The XR Association plans to end operations at the close of 2026. In its October 6 announcement, the trade group says existing work will continue through partner organizations rather than all ending with the association.
XRA describes its role as bringing together companies across the XR ecosystem, from headset makers and platforms to component suppliers, enterprise providers and business users. Its activities include advocacy, research and guidance on responsible development. That makes this a change in industry representation, rather than a product announcement.
Where the work is intended to go
| Partner | Planned continuation |
|---|---|
| ITIF | AR/VR Policy Conference for at least three more years. |
| BPC Action | Legislative advocacy. |
| IVRHA | Completion of healthcare workshop research and follow-up on its recommendations. |
XRA says its remaining scheduled programs will continue through 2026. It presents the closure as the completion of its original mission and argues that XR policy now belongs within broader technology discussions.
Why the policy work matters
The existing partnership is visible in ITIF’s listing for the September 24, 2026 AR/VR Policy Conference. Its agenda spans privacy, safety, artificial intelligence, education, accessibility and workforce development. These are practical questions about how immersive technology is used, not simply which headset launches next.
The distinction for readers is between an organization and the companies it represents. This announcement is not evidence that a particular headset loses updates, that a game service is closing or that a manufacturer has abandoned XR. Those conclusions require separate evidence from the relevant company.
What to watch after the announcement
Our assessment is that the useful follow-up will be whether the named programs continue with clear ownership, public access and regular output. A promised handover is a starting point; future conference listings, research releases and partner statements will show what was actually delivered.
XRA’s assessment of its own success is also the organization’s position. It should not be treated as an independent measurement of XR adoption or as a forecast of hardware sales.
