A $500 VR budget goes further when you already own the hardware a headset needs. For a first standalone setup, investigate Quest 3S. For someone with a PS5, PS VR2 is another route to compare. For PC VR, the computer and connection requirements can decide the purchase before the headset price does. These are conditional starting points, not a tested ranking of every headset.
Start with what you already own
| Your starting point | Route to investigate | Costs still to check |
|---|---|---|
| No gaming PC or PS5 | Quest 3S for standalone apps | Headset, chosen apps, tax, shipping and any personal fit needs |
| A PS5 you already own | PS VR2 for compatible PS5 games | Headset, games, tax and shipping; count the console if you must buy one |
| A Windows gaming PC you already own | PS VR2 with Sony’s PC adapter | Headset, adapter, DisplayPort cable, games and any compatibility fixes |
Use price references as a starting budget
On October 9, 2026, our US Meta store check showed Quest 3S starting at $349.99. Sony’s $399.99 PS VR2 figure comes from its February 27, 2025 announcement of a recommended retail price effective that March. Sony’s current US product page did not expose a price in our check, so that older figure is a conditional budgeting reference. We have not verified a current PS VR2 checkout offer.
| Reference | Amount | Remaining from $500 |
|---|---|---|
| Quest 3S starting US listing observed October 9 | $349.99 | $150.01 |
| PS VR2 historical US RRP; current checkout unverified | $399.99 | $100.01, only if that price is available |
Those balances are simple subtraction before sales tax, shipping, software and additional hardware. They are not complete setup quotes. Put the exact items you need into a cart and compare its total with your ceiling. A discounted headset can help, but a headline about a sale does not confirm your chosen configuration, seller or delivery date.
Quest 3S: investigate this route for standalone use
Meta describes Quest 3S as an all-in-one headset and lists Touch Plus controllers in the box. Standalone apps run on the headset, so a gaming PC or PS5 is not part of that setup. Check the supported devices and storage requirements for the experiences you want before choosing a configuration.
Keep room in the budget for those apps and any prescription or fit solution you need. Avoid filling the cart with optional straps, cases and batteries before you know what problem they would solve. We have not tested fit or comfort. If you can try a headset, use that opportunity and check the seller’s return terms.

PS VR2: the PS5 you own changes the calculation
Sony’s US listing includes the headset, two Sense controllers and stereo headphones. For console play, it requires a PS5 and compatible software, sold separately. A PS4 cannot substitute, and Sony says content requiring the original PS VR is not compatible. Check the exact edition of each game you want instead of treating an existing PlayStation library as a ready-made VR library.
If you already own the PS5, its earlier purchase is outside your new $500 spending allowance. If you need to buy one, add it to the same shopping list before calling the setup affordable. This guide does not establish a complete new PS5-and-headset package below $500.
PC VR: check the ports before buying the adapter
Sony’s PC route requires its PS VR2 PC adapter and a DisplayPort 1.4 cable, as well as a PC meeting its published requirements. Its support page calls for a dedicated standard or Mini DisplayPort output and explicitly says DisplayPort over USB-C is not compatible with the adapter. A USB-C video port alone therefore does not settle compatibility.
Check the graphics hardware, USB and Bluetooth requirements too. Sony lists Steam, SteamVR and its PS VR2 app for setup. We have not priced a complete adapter-and-cable package or confirmed your PC, so we cannot promise this route fits the remaining allowance. Check PC-specific feature support and your intended games before comparing it with console use.
Make the final decision from one complete cart
Choose two or three experiences first. Confirm their exact platform and hardware requirements, add every necessary purchase, and compare the delivered total. A used or refurbished headset may change the arithmetic, but we have not verified a specific offer, condition or warranty and are not recommending an unverified listing. If the full setup exceeds your ceiling, reduce optional purchases or wait for an offer you can actually verify.

Primary sources checked October 9, 2026. US price references are dated and have different evidentiary status: an observed Meta listing and Sony’s February 2025 price announcement. Neither is a completed checkout or stock guarantee. Later Meta requests redirected to Brazil; that regional availability is not evidence about US stock. The budget arithmetic and conditional recommendations are Choosense’s analysis. No hands-on testing or exhaustive market ranking.
